The Purpose of Meditation

The purpose of meditation is a matter of perspective. That perspective depends on what your belief is. It would be dogmatic if I were to tell you, or anybody else what the purpose of meditation is. Some people believe that the purpose of meditation is to become in union with God. Some believe it is to listen to God. Some believe it is to communicate with the Universe. Some believe it is to become one with the universe. I guess I could go on and on about this, but I think you may get the idea that it is all about what YOU believe as an individual.

In my perspective, however, the purpose of meditation is to clear away all of the things that are NOT and allow the things that ARE to be. For instance, worry. If I concentrate on something that I am worrying about, I am not concentrating on the solution. When I meditate I bring my thoughts away from things that do not matter. The things that I worry about do not matter, but the solutions to them do matter. I have found that in meditation solutions come to me without any resistance as if they materialize out of thin air. Maybe they do. Maybe while in meditation my mind is so far away from the problem that the answer that is already inside of me comes to light.

In times long ago people would heat silver in order to melt away the “dross.” This would remove all of the impurities from the silver so all that was left was the purest silver. Meditation is a lot like this. When we stop our thoughts and allow the flames of stillness to melt the dross of our minds away we bring out the pure wisdom of our hearts. We allow the knowledge that is already within us to float to the surface of our consciousness  and bring the answers we are searching for.
