Using a Mantra

Do you know how to use a mantra? The Healing Power Within gives a bit of a description, but you may still have questions. The use of a mantra, or mantram, is very powerful and can truly help you with keeping your unruly mind focused.

What is a Mantra?

A mantra is a word or string of words that you repeat over and over again in your mind in order to achieve different states of consciousness. Many ancient texts talk about using mantras to cast spells or call upon the weapons of the Gods in battle. Whether or not these depictions are literal, or spiritual I can’t say one way or the other, but it is evident to me that when I use a mantra it has the power to pull me away from my chaotic thinking and bring me into a place of peace, even just for that moment. A mantra can be anything you want it to be, however, there are mantras that are believed to be more spiritually charged than others.

How do I Use a Mantra?

In order to use a mantra, the first thing you need to do is choose one. I use Om Mani Padme Hum. Some sages believe that you have to obtain one from a guru, or master. Others believe that it comes from within. I believe a little of both. In order to understand meditation and spirituality, we have to hear about it from somebody. When we learn about it, we begin to look within and see for ourselves. In any case, if you would like guidance I suggest reading the Mantram Handbook by Eknath Easwaran.

For this instance, we can assume you will use the love mantra. I love you. All you need to do in order to use this mantra is to say the words “I love you” over and over again in your head. When any other thought comes to mind and pulls your attention away, simply go back to your mantra. After a while, all that you are is your mantra. At that moment, free of chaotic thoughts, your mind pulled away from the senses and focused purely on love.
